About Shelley
My family moved to Apple Valley from Boston in 1991. We moved for what can be
fairly described as "quality of life" concerns.
We lived in a vibrant city and enjoyed its many benefits, including a
wonderful mass transit system, quality health care and a robust economy.
But something important was missing. We both worked full time, and lived
with a 50 minute commute, each way for our jobs. That left precious little
family time. We needed a change.
On a family vacation to the Minneapolis - St Paul area, fate intervened.
On our way to find the Minnesota Zoo - an indoor zoo, something we had to
see to believe - we got lost. We found ourselves in this lovely little
neighborhood, and within two hours decided that we were seeing the change
we needed. We bought a house! We knew from the beginning that our move to
Minnesota was the right thing for our family.
While we found the improved quality of life we sought, and have never for a
minute regretted the move, we have been saddened to see a slow and steady
deterioration in many of the amenities and intangibles that had drawn our
family - and probably yours as well - to make our home in this area.
I look around and see a different Minnesota. I see a national tourist site, the Minnesota Zoological Gardens, struggling to survive. Fee increases and service reductions necessitated by shortsighted budget cuts, over time, have made our nationally recognized zoo unaffordable for the average Minnesota family. I see our schools scrambling to find ways to make ends meet, and parents working harder and harder to do the same in their households. I see traffic congestion growing daily, roads unable to absorb the rapidly increasing commuter load, and state government relatively indifferent to this problem. Minnesota is becoming that which my family and I moved here to escape.
We can do better.
