BUILDING A STRONGER CITY TOGETHER

Shelley’s Vision

I envision a Minneapolis where everyone has equal access to opportunities, resources, and community participation.

My career has been rooted in practical, people-first solutions. I have always believed in prioritizing good governing over ideological grandstanding. Whether advocating for disability rights, improving transit access, or working to support small businesses and families, I’ve delivered real results for our community. I know how to listen to neighbors and work with stakeholders to get things done. Here’s what that means in Ward 2.

MY PRIORITIES

  • Public safety is important to everyone in our community, from our students to our seniors. A strong public safety department includes implementing the community policing reforms from the City’s consent decrees with the state of Minnesota and Department of Justice while also meeting the mandate of police staffing under our city charter.

    • Funding violence interrupter programs

    • Full implementation of the Consent decrees to hold officers accountable

    • Expansion of Minneapolis’ mental health co-responder program

    • Opening new community safety centers and the 3rd Precinct.

  • Every member of our community deserves a safe, affordable place to live. Housing is a human right and we must be diligent in our efforts to address the lack of housing to meet our needs. We need more housing that supports growing families, we have to adjust zoning regulations and permitting to help to reduce the costs, and promote more home ownership pathways.

We must also address affordable housing through our unsustainable property tax increases. In the last five years, property taxes have gone from 43% of a homeowners tax bill to 54%. Our homeowners and renters also pay county taxes, school levy, and park board taxes as well. If you also add on the cost of special assessments, no matter what, your base payment costs have risen beyond many Minneapolis residents’ ability to keep up.

I will advocate for affordable housing policies that support aging in place, programs to increase first-time home ownership, and renter protections.

    • I will fully staff our public services and regulatory services to ensure  our tenant regulations are effectively enforced.

    • I will work to improve accessible housing by supporting the expansion of affordable, frequent transit service in underserved neighborhoods.

    • I will build upon the success of the Stable Homes Stable Schools funding to keep our children in their neighborhood schools

  • Supporting economic growth is vital to keeping Minneapolis a great place to live, and for making sure that once students have a degree, there are jobs available for them in the place where they want to work and live. We need to do work to make our students at the University of Minnesota and Augsburg University, whatever their passions, continue to choose to live in Minneapolis.

    • I will advocate for businesses in our city by simplifying the processes of permits, inspections, licensing, and accessing city resources.

    • I plan to lessen the degree of regulation and additional costs imposed on businesses in Minneapolis compared to similar jurisdictions.

    • I will coordinate programs that train individuals for careers in technical fields; such as healthcare, IT, and construction to grow our city’s economy.

    • I will collaborate with council members, community leaders, and local agencies to revitalize Downtown through investments in arts and culture.

  • Your city council should work for you, not as a stage for ideological political interests - that means prioritizing good governance over ideological grandstanding. As a trusted public servant, I plan to do just that. With my years of experience in public service and Minneapolis, I am ready to get to work on day one.

    • I will be transparent about our goals and progress in Ward 2 newsletters.

    • I will show up and listen, and then put action to those concerns.

    • I will continue to personally engage with every neighborhood in our community.

    • I am always ready to answer an email, pick up the phone, or meet face-to-face with any resident that wants to be heard.

  • I will continue to prioritize Minneapolis residents through Minneapolis-focused policies. My work will be focused on improving the daily lives of those in our community, by:

    • Addressing the 21 miles of unlit street lights in our city

    • Improving our roads by prioritizing them in our Public Works budget

    • Legislating based on public input rather than personal ideology

    • And collaborating with council members, residents, city staff, and the mayor.

  • I am incredibly passionate about creating welcoming spaces in our community, for our community. If elected, I will work to build new gathering places which would include a youth center and a senior center. These centers would work to make services such as financial literacy, health screenings, and physical and emotional well-being programs more accessible.

A youth center would provide a space where youth could gather in a safe space, learn about community resources, and build meaningful relationships with other youth and adults. The center could also provide educational support, job training, and college preparatory training. Our youth deserve a place where we honor their time and show them we care.

A senior center would address many issues often faced by our senior population, and provide community access to necessary services. The center could also provide resources for caregivers and family members to help support their loved ones.

Communities are built on connections, and ours would benefit from more shared spaces. Creating centers where social connections and learning intersect would greatly improve the quality of life for our residents.

While I believe these changes can be made to make Minneapolis an even more equitable and inclusive city, I know it will take work. I will put in the work to make sure that every voice is heard and every neighborhood, business, family, and person can thrive here. As a community, we can make this shared vision a reality.
